It's not pretty, but it's fun.
Women's rugby is tough, intense and growing across Hamilton

A daughter's interest in playing rugby and her mother's protective instincts don't always have an easy relationship.

Consider Angela Cowley. The 24-year-old's mother didn't really want her to play out of concern for her safety. So what happens the first time mom comes out to watch a game to see how safe it is?

"A girl breaks her freakin' ankle," Cowley laughs.

And Emma Elston? Her mom's introduction to the game came when her 26-year-old daughter returned home after a practice and proudly announced her new position: hooker.

"She was not impressed," Elston chuckles.

But the two Hamilton women want you to forget all that stuff. They're on a mission to get more women involved in the sport they love. Yes, there are bruises. Yes, there's the occasional injury. Yes, the players' boyfriends and husbands occasionally get the evil eye from strangers when their girlfriend is walking down the street with a nice shiner. Yet more than anything, they say, it's fun. And growing.

While the sport opened up to women in the 1970s, it wasn't until the early '90s that it really gained a foothold and started to draw much interest. Since then, it's considered to be one of the faster-growing women's sports in the world. While exact numbers are tough to find, 543 high schools across the country -- including six in Hamilton -- now have girls' rugby, roughly double what was in place five years ago.

According to Stoney Creek Camels' coach Gary Whitley, it's at the university level where the game's really exploding. Most schools are getting 50-100 players trying out. It's a bit of a slower process at the club level, but the numbers are going up across Hamilton.
